Big Hope Features in All Saints Childwall Church Magazine

Below is an article in the July Edition of the All Saints Childwall Church Magazine and written by Dr Joan McClelland, a member of Council of Hope and contributor to the forum on The Sanctity of Human Life.

The Big Hope 2008 included inspirational keynote lectures, lively debates, creativity, daily prayers, a Taize service and forging of new friendships. These all emphasised the many positive contributions which young Christians and those of other faiths are making in God’s world. This Global Youth Congress at Liverpool Hope University in Hope Park in Childwall was principally for those between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The aim of the Congress was to encourage delegates to create a more humane global society. More than 500 delegates from 55 countries attended. The Foundation Chancellor, Baroness Caroline Cox is heavily involved with international humanitarian work and gave a moving lecture on The Privilege of Making a Difference. She spoke of what can be achieved when ordinary people make a stand against injustice, finishing with the words “I cannot do everything but I must NOT do nothing.” These words were particularly poignant as delegates included young people from Burma, Tibet, Zimbabwe, Sudan and other areas of conflict and injustice. Messages of hope for a more humane society from other speakers included these:
Hope is strengthened in direct proportion to how widely it is shared
I will have a goal and work hard to achieve that goal
To know God is to do justice
Fairtrade provides a way to enable people to make a difference in a world where two billion people earn less than $2 a day
One act of kindness affects one person who can affect the world
Delegates will go back to countries with poverty, conflict, devastation and degradation with hope in their hearts – that hope is God given
All the darkness in the world cannot put out the light of one little candle
This short article cannot adequately cover the many messages of hope and inspiration.

Harry Haga of DFID

Harry Haga of DFID was at the Big Hope today. Harry is Head of DFID Policy Division dealing particularly with Growth Issues. He will be contributing to the Ethical Ethics Forum. He started his professional life as an accountant with Ernst Young and then worked fro the Office of Electricity Regulation before joining DFID in 1994. He has remained at DFID ever since except for a period of 3 years at the World Bank.

At DFID he has worked in the Asia, Latin America and Oceans Department, the East Africa , the Know-How Fund, the International Financial Institutions Department , the Education Department and as part of a team co-ordinating donors, establishing trust funds and raising finance. He is currently Senior Economic Advisor with reference DRC, Burundi, Angola, Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia providing economic advice on post conflict activity.

Visitor: Joelle Jenny, DFID Deputy Head of Profession for Governance and Conflict

DFID Deputy Head of Profession for Governance and Conflict Joelle Jenny is visiting the Big Hope on Monday to act as an expert witness for the Conflict Transformatioand Peace Building strand being run by Barry Hart. Joelle is well experienced to contribute particularly on the theme of weakness of fragile states in sustaining development.

She is fluent in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. She has worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross, NATO, the Swiss Foreign Ministry and since 2004 DIFID. She has been based in the USA, Switzerland and Belgium and in addition she has lived in Angola, Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Macedonia,

She is an expert on conflict and disaster management; Security Sector Reform, Multi-lateral Diplomacy, Peacekeeping, Administration of emergency humanitarian programmes. She has advised on security and conflict in Iraq and written political briefs for the Secretary General of NATO.

We thank DIFID for their continued support for the Big Hope.

Be Part of the The Big Hope Wednesday 4th to Wednesday 11th June Hope's Global Youth Congress, The Big Hope, began on Wednesday with a magnificent opening ceremony at the Metropolitan Cathedral and, during the week, there will be some great keynote lectures in the packed programme of events.

Yestersday the keynote programme began with a lecture by Dr Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi on Peaceful Co-existence and Faith. In the afternoon Mary McAleese, President of Ireland spoke about Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding and then Shadid Malik, Minister for International Development set out his Department's goals and policy and finally Iman Abdul Jalil Sajid's talk considered Faith in a Secular Democracy.

Details of today's programme are given below. Other speakers to come include Sir Stephen Wall, former Advisor on Europe to Tony Blair; Archbishop John Sentamu; Stephen Green, Group Chairman of HSBC and Dr APJ Adbul Kalam, President of India 2002 - 2007 who is here on Sunday.

It is felt that all members of staff should have the opportunity to attend at least one of the keynote sessions that are taking place in the Sports Hall.

1.30pm Rt Hon John Gummer MP for Suffolk Coast: Christian Faith and the Environment

A Big Hope Big Concert* featuring Hope's own Professor Joanna MacGregor, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Roger Phillips of BBC Radio Merseyside and Big Hope student acts will be held on Tuesday 10th June at 7.30pm in the Philharmonic Hall and the week concludes on Wednesday 11th June in the Anglican Cathedral at 10.30am.

Sajjad Karim Conservative MEP for North West England is visiting the Big Hope today (Friday) During his visit he will meet the 70 young Europeans sponsored by the Youth in Action Programme and also the students from the HERODOT Geography Network. He will also launch the new HERODOT collection of essay written by HERODOT members as part of a competition to win a scholarship to attedn the Big Hope.
